Charles Dickens said: “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” I agree 100%. Those without pets sometimes do not understand the unconditional bond that exists between owner and animal.
For both my husband and myself, cats have always been a part of our life. Upon purchasing our first house in Newfoundland in 1999, the initial priority was finding two cats to make the home complete.
Peach (aka Red) and Onyx (aka Black Beauty) became our “boys” or “Baby B’s”; having no children, our two cats really were our ‘kids.’ They endured several work transfers and moves through Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The biggest move came in November 2014, flying from Halifax to Toronto. They settled in the big city very well.
In June 2015 we noticed a change in both boys. After a series of vet visits the testing confirmed serious illnesses in both. Shortly after, just a month apart, we lost both Peach and Onyx. We had the boys for 16 1/2 wonderful years. Saying goodbye to them was the hardest decision ever. The only solace is knowing that this was the best, most difficult, act of love we could give them. Needless to say, our hearts were broken.
A short time after losing our furbabies we became volunteer foster parents with Toronto Cat Rescue for cats in need of transitional homes. Our hearts weren’t healed enough to become full time pet parents but we still wanted cats in our lives.
Fostering is very demanding and at times quite stressful, but it is such a rewarding experience. Toronto Cat Rescue primarily rescues cats that are orphaned or abandoned and not yet suited for adoption because they are ill, injured, scared and shy. It involved frequent vet appointments, bottle feedings, administering medicines, eye drops, litter training, socializing of the cats, and the list goes on and on. Each cat or kitten that we fostered was treated as our own, given lots of love and nursed back to health. The transformation of the cats from the time we received them until they were ready for adoption was absolutely amazing. When the time came to say good bye it was always a tearful experience. We were so happy these amazing little creatures had found great homes but we so sad to say good bye because we loved them so much.
We continued to foster until finally deciding that we were ready to make the long term commitment of being pet parents again. Theodore, or Teddy as we like to call him, is what foster parents call a ‘foster fail’ – the best kind of failure possible! Within a couple of weeks, we adopted Cricket, also a rescue cat. While we still miss Peach & Onyx and have many great memories, we have opened up our hearts and home to Teddy & Cricket and we love them with all our hearts. And it is this love that sets the bar for the standard of care we will give your cats. Before walking into a client's home, we always remind ourselves that the cats inside are someone's Teddy and Cricket.
My husband and I have always loved to travel. One of the most stressful parts of planning a trip is ensuring we had the very best of care for our cats. We have cancelled business trips and vacations in the past if a suitable cat sitter was not available. Cat sitters must be reliable, caring and ultimately trustworthy. We have hired some wonderful cat sitters throughout the years. Our vacations are so much more enjoyable, knowing our cats are left in good hands.
One of my recent customers said “You get it; you really get it!” and we do. We understand the stress of being away from your pets. It is because we understand that we started Cat Sitter Toronto. We want you to be able to enjoy your time away while we pamper and care for your kitties.
