DIY Puzzle Feeders

DIY Puzzle Feeders:

If you give a cat a treat, he will eat for a second, if you give a cat a puzzle feeder he will be engaged for hours. Puzzle feeders are a great option for any cat. They combine play with reward, and are an excellent way to engage a cat mentally and physically. Feeders can help to keep a cat from being bored during those long days alone, but also a way to keep a cat from over indulging in that delicious dry kibble. I have used puzzle feeders with clients cats as well as my own and have seen the positive benefits first hand.

The downside to puzzle feeders though is that they can be expensive, ranging from $20 to upwards of $50. A store-bought puzzle feeder is an investment for your cat, before investing I would suggest experimenting with some DIY options to ensure that a puzzle feeder will work for your cat. There are many ways to construct a feeder at home and some DIY ones can be fairly elaborate.

In this video I demonstrate two methods to making a puzzle feeder from common household items. For the puzzle feeders I used the following materials

  1. glue gun
  2. cardboard
  3. carpet scrap
  4. egg carton
  5. plastic tray with sections
  6. treats or kibble

All of these items I had lying around at home, however I would estimate that to purchase the items used it would cost maybe $5 to $10, I was also able to make two puzzle feeders from these materials so in the end I saved at least $30 if not more. Should you decide to purchase a feeder, amazon has a great selection to peruse and if you decide to try DIY it can also give you inspiration.
