Kitty Myths: Debunked
Vanessa Tolentino
Kitty myths: Debunked! There is always some new myth about having cats as pets. Kitties may get a bad rep from people who have had unfortunate encounters with them. As a cat lover, it is my duty to debunk the common misconceptions people may have about them. Felines may be a little more temperamental and may not be as engaging as a cute little puppy, but they are still wonderful creatures that are sometimes misunderstood. In this article, we’ll go over some of the most common myths about cats!
1.Cats Hate Water:
Most cat owners know that our kitties do a wonderful job of cleaning themselves up. Cats spend a good chunk of their day grooming themselves but sometimes, humans have to intervene. Whether it be a litter box accident or Miss Kitty getting herself into some finger paint, many cat parents dread the idea of having to wash up our furry friends. However, did you know that not all cats hate water? Some breeds even enjoy it! Check out this post. Experts say that the reason why cats may hate getting wet is because they are desert animals who are simply better adapted to dry climates. If you do
have to bathe your kitty, make sure you are patient and reward them with some treats!
2.Black Cats Are Bad Luck:
The notion that black cats would bring one bad luck stemmed from the Middle Ages, where they were also associated with witchcraft. At the time, the colour black often had negative connotations. Other animals, such as ravens, were equally associated with bad luck and death. Unfortunately, this led to many attempts to eradicate black cats throughout history. To this day, black cats are often stigmatized due to superstition but also due to aesthetic purposes. Some people overlook black cats as they do not photograph well, but any owner of a house panther will tell you that they are just as loving and zany as any kitty! No bad luck here!
3.Cats Love Milk:
Often, in media and film, we’ll see people leaving out dishes of milk for stray cats. While the image of a little kitten lapping up a bowl of fresh milk might be adorable, in reality, cats are lactose intolerant! Their lactose intolerance develops as
they grow older. Save your kitty (and yourself) the trouble and only give your cat small amounts of dairy as a treat, or pick up some cat milk from your local pet store.
4.Cats Have Nine Lives:
Cats most definitely only have one life. There is no proven origin to this myth, although many say that it is because cats are associated with magic and are often given otherworldly attributes. Some also say it is because in Ancient Egypt,
cats were worshipped in society. These days, we can probably attribute it to the way kitties manage to avoid injury thanks to their agile and flexible anatomy.
5.Cats Always Land On Their Feet:
I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying, “a cat will always land on its feet.” Anyone who’s seen their kitty leap from a shelf or dresser might agree. However, even with such spectacular reflexes, any cat can be seriously injured from a fall. Owners should take great care in ensuring that windows and balconies stay closed so that their feline friends stay safe.
