Summer safety tips for pet owners: Summer is not too far off. Here are some great tips to help you and your pet have a great summer.
Don’t put clothes on your pets.
In the summertime it’s gonna be hot and putting a sweater on your pet doesn’t help it with heat-related problems. If you make your animal wear clothes during the hot summer times, your pet is more likely to overheat. It’s only best to put clothes on pets during the colder weather. Also, some pets aren’t really happy with clothes, sometimes it can cause discomfort, stress, and injuries. Deciding when and what to wear is a wardrobe problem not only for humans. Listen to your pet, they will tell you what they like.
Make sure that your pet has enough water and shade.
Make sure that you carry enough water for both you and your pet when you are taking them out for a walk. If need be you can change your pet’s food with something with more moisture in order to keep your pet more hydrated. If your pet is a dog then it will drink water and pant to cool itself off. If it starts having Heavy panting, Dry or bright red gums, thick drool, Vomiting, Diarrhea, or Wobbly legs then you should find some shade and put a damp towel over it and call the vet as soon as possible. Do not put them in cold water because the instant change in temperature can cause the pet to go into shock.
Being prepared for the heat is key, perhaps switch outside time to a cooler part of the day. Make sure that you are taking your pets either early in the morning or when the sun is setting not when it is at its peak. The reason for this is because those are the times when it’s going to be cooler when you step outside. After every adventure, it’s a good idea to spray your pet with water or rub it with a cool towel, make sure that you rub its paws and stomach.
*Remember Pavement gets hot! Be careful that it doesn’t burn your pets foot pads
Apply sunscreen
Your pet is also susceptible to sunburns. The sunscreen should be applied every 3-4 hours on the spots with the least amount of hairs like the belly, behind the ears, and its face. Use a sunscreen that is made for pets is highly recommended because it will contain substances that won’t be as bad for your pet if ingested. The reason you should apply sunscreen is that just like us humans animals can also get skin cancer. If you aren’t sure what sunscreen to use, talk to your Vet.
Change Grooming Routines:
Make sure that if you are going to trim your pet’s fur not to go too short. The fur can help insulate your pet while it is outside and protect its skin from sun exposure. Should you decide to groom at home, talk with a local groomer or your vet for tips and tricks you can use at home. If you aren’t interested in doing this at home a groomer is the best place to start. Let them know your reasons for the groom and they will make sure your fur baby has a stunning hairdo for the summer
Parasites:
Parasites are going to be a big problem during the summer seasons. Mosquitos, ticks, and fleas are going to be out for your pets and some of them carry diseases or other parasites that will be harmful to your pet. Don’t fear though, you don’t need to avoid outside just plan ahead and be prepared. Ask your vet for appropriate medication to keep the pests off of your pet (and parasites out)
